Planning a Char Dham pilgrimage this October? After reports of flooding near the Nepal–Tibet border, it is understandable to have questions about travelling in the Himalayas.
The good news is that a disaster in one Himalayan region does not automatically mean that every other region is affected. Still, weather, road access and local warnings matter when travelling to high-altitude destinations.
The short answer
Is Char Dham Yatra safe after the Nepal floods?
The Nepal floods alone do not establish that Char Dham routes in Uttarakhand are unsafe. The areas have different local river systems and terrain. Your decision should depend on current conditions along your actual route.
In October and November, prepare for cold nights, possible early snow and travel delays. Check updates on the day of your journey.
What happened in Nepal on 26 August 2026?
Reports described a destructive flood near the Lhende River in the Nepal–Tibet border region. Floodwater and debris affected parts of Nepal's Rasuwa district and the nearby Tibetan border area.
Early reports discussed possible glacial causes, including glacier collapse and an ice-rock avalanche. For the latest casualty figures and confirmed findings, refer to updated reporting and official disaster information.
For Char Dham travellers, the main lesson is to respect mountain hazards and follow official instructions. The event alone is not evidence that the Uttarakhand pilgrimage routes have been affected.
Why Uttarakhand needs its own safety check
Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri are in separate Garhwal valleys. Each has its own road conditions, weather patterns and local risks.
Uttarakhand has experienced serious disasters, including the 2013 Kedarnath floods and the 2021 Chamoli disaster. October is generally after the main monsoon season, but it is not risk-free. Cold, snow, fog and temporary road restrictions can still affect travel.

What is the weather like in October?
Lower towns may be comfortable during the day, but higher-altitude shrines can become very cold after sunset. Early snowfall, rain, fog and low cloud are possible as winter approaches.
Check the India Meteorological Department forecast close to departure. A forecast from several days ago may no longer reflect conditions on your route.
What to pack
Carry thermal layers, a warm jacket, gloves, a cap, shoes with good grip, personal medicines and waterproof protection. Pack light, but do not compromise on warm clothing.
Travelling by helicopter? Keep your plans flexible
A helicopter can shorten travel time, but it cannot remove mountain weather risks. Visibility, cloud, wind, permissions and operational conditions affect whether a flight can operate.
Flights may be delayed, rescheduled or cancelled when conditions are unsuitable. Confirm the latest status with your package coordinator and leave a buffer day if possible.
- Carry original photo ID and required registration documents.
- Follow baggage and passenger-weight instructions.
- Do not assume a cancelled flight will operate later that day.
- Follow all instructions from pilots and ground staff.

Altitude and health: what pilgrims should know
Altitude-related illness can affect people of different ages and fitness levels. Headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual tiredness or breathlessness should not be ignored.
Stop ascending if symptoms develop and seek medical advice. Severe breathlessness at rest, confusion or difficulty walking requires urgent medical attention and descent when safe. People with existing heart or lung conditions should speak to their doctor before travelling.
