Haridwar is one of India's most sacred pilgrimage destinations. Every few years, the city welcomes devotees who come to take a holy dip in the Ganga, visit temples and experience the spiritual atmosphere of the Kumbh gathering.

With preparations underway for the 2027 event, many travellers are asking a simple question: is it a Mahakumbh or an Ardh Kumbh? The names can be confusing, especially when different websites use them interchangeably.

The short answer

Is Haridwar 2027 a Mahakumbh or an Ardh Kumbh?

Haridwar's 2027 gathering is commonly referred to as the Ardh Kumbh Mela. Maha Kumbh is traditionally associated with the major 144-year cycle at Prayagraj. The names are not interchangeable, even when a gathering is expected to attract very large crowds.

For planning purposes, always follow the latest official Haridwar Mela Administration schedule. Government information published on 30 September 2026 gives the mela period as 1 January to 30 April 2027 and mentions four Amrit Snan events.

Ardh Kumbh, Purna Kumbh and Maha Kumbh: what is the difference?

The easiest way to understand the names is to look at the traditional cycles and the places associated with the gatherings.

Six-year cycle

Ardh Kumbh

A gathering traditionally associated with the halfway point in the Kumbh cycle at Haridwar and Prayagraj.

Twelve-year cycle

Purna Kumbh

The full Kumbh cycle at the four traditional pilgrimage locations: Haridwar, Prayagraj, Ujjain and Nashik.

Traditional 144-year cycle

Maha Kumbh

The term is traditionally associated with the special cycle at Prayagraj. It should not be used as a substitute for the official name of every Kumbh gathering.

A useful reminder

Check the official name

Event names and schedules should be confirmed through official announcements, not marketing headlines alone.

The word “Kumbh” is also connected with the story of Samudra Manthan, or the churning of the cosmic ocean. According to Hindu tradition, drops of amrit fell at four sacred locations, including Haridwar. This story is central to the religious significance of the gathering.

Haridwar Kumbh 2027: dates and Amrit Snan schedule

For major bathing days, make arrangements early. Transport diversions, walking distances and crowd-control measures can affect the time it takes to reach the ghats.

Where can you take a holy dip in Haridwar?

Har Ki Pauri

One of the city's most revered ghats, known for its connection with Brahma Kund and the evening Ganga Aarti.

Subhash Ghat

A ghat close to the main bathing area. Check local crowd management and access before visiting.

Gau Ghat

Another bathing area in Haridwar. Suitability and access depend on the current arrangements.

Other authorised ghats

Follow official directions to the bathing locations open on your visit date. Access may change during major events.

Do not assume every ghat will be open to everyone on every major bathing day. Police and Mela officials may introduce access restrictions for crowd safety.

More to experience during your Haridwar visit

The Kumbh gathering is not only about bathing. Many visitors also spend time at temples, listen to spiritual discourses and experience the city's evening prayers.

  • Ganga Aarti: Experience the evening prayers at Har Ki Pauri, subject to crowd arrangements.
  • Mansa Devi Temple: A popular temple overlooking Haridwar.
  • Chandi Devi Temple: Another important local pilgrimage destination.
  • Daksh Mahadev Temple: Visit the temple area in Kankhal.
  • Rishikesh: If your schedule allows, plan a separate visit to its ghats, ashrams and spiritual centres.

Be respectful when photographing religious ceremonies, saints and akhara camps. Follow photography restrictions wherever they apply.

How to plan your Haridwar Kumbh trip

Choose your dates carefully

Amrit Snan days and other major bathing occasions may draw very large crowds. If your priority is a quieter visit, consider dates outside the main bathing events, after checking the official calendar.

Travel by train, air or road

Haridwar Junction connects the city to the rail network. Jolly Grant Airport near Dehradun is the nearest major airport, with onward road travel to Haridwar. On major event days, diversions and designated parking areas may change your journey time.

Check registration and entry rules

Check the official Uttarakhand and Mela Administration websites for any registration, pass or identification requirements applicable to your visit. Keep an original government photo ID with you.

Food and local customs

Haridwar is a sacred pilgrimage city. Respect local customs and check current rules regarding food, alcohol and restricted areas. Follow the instructions displayed at temples and ghats.

Where to stay during Haridwar Kumbh Mela 2027

Accommodation near Har Ki Pauri can be in high demand around major bathing dates. Options may include hotels, guest houses, ashrams and temporary camps, depending on availability and permissions.

For families and senior citizens, consider walking distance, reliable transport access, lift availability where needed and the property's cancellation terms. A room a little farther from the busiest ghat may be more practical than staying in an area affected by traffic restrictions.
